Teams are vulnerable and resilience is important to help navigate through growth, challenge, and uncertainty. Here are some tips for strengthening teams in challenging times. They may seem like a no brainer to you- but these are often forgotten when they matter most.

Clarify and Align Purpose and Direction - Revisit and clarify team goals, ensuring alignment with the organization's objectives to minimize conflicts and solidify your own guiding principles.

  • Reconnect with the fundamental reasons behind your team's efforts, highlighting the impact on the broader mission- can they connect what they do to what the organization wants to accomplish?

  • Reinforce Team Values: Emphasize the core beliefs driving your team's behavior and decisions.

  • Revise Objectives: Update your team's goals to reflect current priorities and desired outcomes.

  • Set Clear Metrics: Establish transparent benchmarks for success to collectively track progress and adjust strategies as needed.

Optimize Individual Roles and Goals - Clarity and consensus on team members' responsibilities and expectations is crucial for cohesive performance. Leaders should facilitate discussions to reassess and realign individual roles and objectives in light of any organizational changes. Here are a few considerations:

  • What has evolved and what remains constant and where do people feel anxious about it?

  • What new skills and competencies are required to adapt and excel?

  • How should team members adapt working styles and workflows to the changing environment.

  • In what way do personal objectives support the collective mission?

Streamline Core Team Processes

Effective communication, decision-making, and prioritization processes are the lifelines of a team, especially during periods of uncertainty. Leaders should evaluate and update these processes to maintain alignment with team goals. Key areas include:

  • Enhancing Leadership Communication: Regular, transparent updates regarding changes and their implications will help teams feel connected. Encourage open dialogue and feedback, ensuring team members have a voice.

  • Define Decision-Making Protocols: Clarify how decisions are made and who is involved.

  • Prioritize with Agility: Regularly review and adjust priorities to remain responsive to emerging challenges and opportunities.

Strengthen Team Relationships

Hybrid work can strain team dynamics so it is crucial to proactively nurture relationships. Leaders should prioritize building a supportive and connected team culture for resilience and productivity.

  • Celebrate Achievements: Take time to recognize and celebrate team successes, big and small. Consider tracking quarterly wins.

  • Foster Gratitude: Cultivate a culture of appreciation, acknowledge individual contributions and milestones.

  • Build Conflict Resolution Skills : Equip your team with the skills to resolve conflicts quickly and constructively.

  • Encourage Collaboration: Highlight the importance of teamwork and address barriers to effective collaboration.

We invite you to share your experiences and strategies for team success during these dynamic times. Your insights are valuable to us and our community.
