Unlocking the Power of Humility: Intellectual Humility

Volume 2: Telling it Like it Is - Unlocking the Power of Humility: Intellectual Humility

This is Emotional Adventures in the Office, where we are committed to addressing real struggles that people face at work. Our approach varies. Sometimes we will ask questions, other times we will make bold statements. We're always looking for new topics to delve into, so if you have any suggestions, please let us know.

Let's talk about humility. Not just any humility, intellectual humility, the stuff you feed through your beliefs, ideas and overall view of society and the world.

When I operate with intellectual humility:

  • I am aware and take ownership of my limitations.

  • I am aware of my biases and where they come from.

  • I am willing to listen to viewpoints that aren't my own, even if I think my way is better or more right.

  • I am willing to and can change my mind and point of view with new information-even if I donJt have all of the facts and details - because other people's stories are their own.

  • I can keep my ego in check as I share my truths, especially when other people do not jump immediately on board.

  • I do not rush to defend my own ideas and instead ask other people about theirs.

  • I care more about the actual problem than how right my ideas are or how much smarter or louder I am than the softer voices in the room.

  • I listen to the softer voices in the room because/ know I might learn something.

  • I value asking questions over asserting opinions.

  • I am open minded, curious, and coachable/teachable

  • I own and admit what I do not know.

Intellectual humility creates breakthroughs that allow you to open the door to authenticity. It allows you to learn through relationship building, listening, tolerance and facilitating your own personal growth. It is within you and all you need to do is unlock it.

Yes you can!
