Burnout Pt. 1

Volume 32: Telling it Like it Is - Burnout (Pt. 1)

This is Emotional Adventures in the Office, where we are committed to addressing real struggles that people face at work. Our approach will vary. Sometimes we will ask questions, other times we will make bold statements. We're always looking for new topics to delve into, so if you have any suggestions, please let us know.

Burnout - it is more than a feeling - it's a reality for millions of people who wake up every day feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and disconnected from work they once loved, and sometimes life itself. It creeps up slowly and takes root in daily routines until it just feels like a part of who we are.

PSA: You do not have to live in this state. If you can recognize and understand the stages of burnout you can take control of it before it takes control of you.

There are multiple theories and stages if you look at what the researchers have to say. I have compiled the basics and explained them in a straightforward way below. I hope they make a difference to you:

Stage 1: The drive to prove myself:

Remember when you started your new job? You were excited and energized, ready to conquer everything. You wanted to go the extra mile and prove your worth. In most cases this is where we enter what I like to call the 'yes" phase, saying yes to any and everything and failing to prioritize well. This is not a good start, and it lays the groundwork for burnout.

Stage 2: Neglecting your needs:

As the workload increases and deadlines pile up, that initial excitement starts to fade. You might notice early signs of stress: trouble sleeping, occasional anxiety, overwhelm, but you decide to push through with thoughts of I just need to work harder, not wanting to leave anything until tomorrow. This is the onset of stress and an indicator that you need to slow down, prioritize and potentially ask for help. It is also a good time to ask yourself does this really have to be done today or am I just fueling my own need to be needed?

Stage 3: Displacing Stress:

In this stage, stress in your new normal. You might feel like you are running backwards in place. You may be irritable, tired and get headaches throughout the day. Your motivation is dipping, and it is harder to focus. You might even start to withdraw from things that used to bring you joy. When you start thinking it's just a rough patch but that is a daily mantra, you are starting a mental health decline.

Stage 4: Shifting your Values:

At this stage you are beyond stressed. You are detached and feel disconnected from work and colleagues. Your once passion is now dread. You may find yourself becoming more cynical or negative thinking "what's the point?" Burnout has a hold on you now.
